What Is a Perfume Decant? The Honest Guide to 3ml, 5ml, 10ml and 20ml

A decant is the same fragrance, in a smaller bottle. Here's what each size actually gives you — sprays, weeks of wear and cost per ml — so you can pick without guessing.

A perfume decant is exactly what it sounds like: the fragrance itself, transferred from its original bottle into a smaller glass atomiser. The juice is unchanged. What changes is how much of it you commit to, and how much you pay to find out whether you love it.

Full bottles are a strange way to buy fragrance. You smell a scent for ninety seconds on a paper strip in a bright shop, then spend three figures on 100ml — roughly 1,500 sprays of something you have never worn for a full day. Decants invert that. You buy the wearing time you actually need.

How a decant is made

Every Perfumeza decant is hand-filled to order from a sealed original bottle, using clean glassware and a fresh atomiser for each fill. Nothing is diluted, cut or mixed. The batch details for each fragrance are recorded, so what you receive can always be traced back to the bottle it came from.

The one thing a decant is not is a gift box. You receive the fragrance in a labelled glass atomiser, not the designer packaging — which is precisely why the price per millilitre is what it is.

Choosing your size

We fill four sizes, and each one answers a different question.

  • 3ml — roughly 45 sprays, about a week of daily wear. The right size for "is this me?" Order three or four at once and you have a proper trial at home, on your skin, over several days.
  • 5ml — roughly 75 sprays, two to three weeks. The sweet spot for a fragrance you already suspect you like and want to test in different weather and moods.
  • 10ml — roughly 150 sprays, six to eight weeks. A travel-friendly size that fits hand luggage and lives in a bag or desk drawer without drama.
  • 20ml — roughly 300 sprays, three to four months. For a signature you have already committed to, usually at a far lower cost per ml than a boutique bottle.

Spray counts assume two sprays a day from a standard atomiser. If you are a four-spray person, halve the timings.

Cost per ml is the number that matters

Compare fragrances the way you compare groceries: divide the price by the millilitres. A 20ml decant almost always beats a 10ml on cost per ml, and a 10ml beats a 5ml. On every Perfumeza product page we show the price for each size, so the maths is done for you before you add to basket.

How long does a decant last in storage?

Kept upright, away from direct sunlight and out of a steamy bathroom, a decant holds beautifully for well over a year. Citrus-led fragrances turn first; heavy amber, oud and vanilla compositions are the most forgiving. If you are buying several, store them in a drawer rather than on a windowsill.

Where to start

If you know the house you love, start on our brand pages and pick two 5ml decants from the same family. If you have no idea where to begin, run the Fragrance Finder — six questions, an honest shortlist — or build a Discovery Set of five decants and let a week of real wear decide for you.

The point of a decant is not to spend less. It is to stop spending money on bottles you never finish.
